Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact CHP Border Division at (858) 944-6300.
Update - In an update released Sunday, the California Highway Patrol says the pursuit that led to a multi-agency officer-involved shooting in Oceanside began in Buena Park. “At approximately 12:47 a.m., the Buena Park Police Department attempted to stop a gray 2005 Cadillac CTS for a traffic violation”, officials said. “The driver failed to yield, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. The chase continued south on Interstate 5, where CHP officers assumed primary responsibility.”
The pursuit traversed several freeways for more than an hour before entering the Oceanside CHP jurisdiction. Officers used what CHP describes as a “legal intervention” to stop the suspect vehicle on southbound Interstate 5. “The driver, armed with a handgun, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Moments later, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the agency added.
For several hours during a full freeway closure, the suspect remained in a large brush area within the median between the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5, north of Harbor Drive in Oceanside. Despite repeated commands from CHP and Buena Park PD officers, the suspect refused to surrender and remained uncooperative, according to CHP.
The suspect was taken into custody at approximately 7:40 a.m. and airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of major injuries. Officials say officers recovered an unserialized firearm, commonly referred to as a “ghost gun,” at the location where the suspect was taken into custody. No officers were injured in the shooting.
The CHP Border Division Major Crimes Unit is investigating the cause and sequence of events. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact CHP Border Division at (858) 944-6300.
