'No Kings Day' Demonstrations Draw Thousands to North County Streets
North County saw a major turnout in several cities for what 'No Kings Day' organizers call a 'nationwide day of defiance'
Thousands across North County took part in ‘No Kings Day’ protests today, peacefully standing firm against President Trump’s immigration policies.
1,800 cities across the nation participated in the movement, including Carlsbad, Escondido and San Marcos. Protests in both Carlsbad and Escondido got underway at 10 a.m. and saw major turnouts. Participants could be seen flooding into an area near the intersection of Carlsbad Boulevard & Carlsbad Village Drive in Carlsbad, as well as Grape Day Park in Escondido.
The latest of the North County protests began at 4:15 p.m. on West San Marcos Boulevard near Grand Avenue in San Marcos. Due to the location being near State Route 78, half a dozen California Highway Patrol units were seen parked along the main lanes of the freeway and an exit ramp closer to the rally. Demonstrators did not enter the freeway or off-ramp. All demonstrations have since concluded.
The San Diego Police Department estimates approximately 60,000 people showed up for protests held in their jurisdiction, and Police Chief Scott Wahl commended participants for keeping the rallies peaceful. “We’re grateful to everyone who helped make these events safe for our city,” Wahl said in a statement.
The “No Kings” theme was organized by the 50501 Movement, a nationwide coalition of everyday Americans advocating for democracy and opposing what they describe as authoritarian actions by the Trump administration. The group’s name represents 50 states, 50 protests, and one unified movement. Today also marks President Trump’s 79th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the United States Army.
